Libras and Scorpios share not one, but TWO magical gemstones to celebrate the birth month of October: opal and pink tourmaline! Opal is traditional birthstone for the month but tourmaline is the alternative gemstone; specifically, pink tourmaline.
Opal:
Opals come in all combinations of colors. This stone is delicate and comes from the Greek root opállios, which means “to see a change of color.” The unique rainbow hues set this stone apart from others. Opal’s interaction with light is truly magical. The play-of-color occurs from the diffraction of light by the silica spheres. Regardless if your opal is in a ring, pendant, or earrings you are destined to have fun with the firework of colors!
There are four colors that are based around opals. The first is jelly (opaque) and the second is white, which is the most common and traditional color. The third, gray, is white and black in color. The fourth color is black which is the rarest and expensive! The only place you can find a black opal is typically in the Australian Lightning Ridge mountain range.
Opal is highly recommended to be worn in pendants and earrings because of its softness. It is common for them to be worn in rings as well, but a little care must be taken to ensure that they aren’t hit against a hard surface.
The best way to take care of this stone is with warm soapy water. When storing it away, place it in a box or someplace away from direct sunlight!

Tourmaline:
Tourmaline is the alternative stone option for the October birthstone. Tourmaline can come in every color on the spectrum; however pink tourmaline is specific to October. The rarest color shade for the tourmaline is the intense red, this color is sought after and very luxurious. Don’t be scared to step outside of your comfort zone and wear the other beautiful colors of tourmaline.
Tourmaline is found in many places throughout the world with especially large deposits located in Brazil, Sri Lanka and South Africa.
Tourmaline is durable, fairly scratch resistant, and safe to wear in any style of jewelry!
The best way to take care of this stone is with warm soapy water or professional cleaning.
