Keeping your jewelry organized sounds simple, but we know how quick and easy it is for dressers to become a catch-all mess. We have years of experience untangling our customers’ necklaces and chains and have compiled a list of our best tricks to store your pieces and organize your jewelry box!
We hope this encourages you to give your pieces some love or even re-discover your favorite earrings that had been forgotten.
The good news: this is a budget-friendly DIY! So, let’s get into it!
Step 1. Clean Slate
Take out all of your jewelry from your jewelry box, drawer, or off of your wall. You’re going to want to clear out space where you store your jewelry for a fresh start. The first step always feels good!
Key Tip: Lay all of your pieces out and organize them into sections (necklace, bracelets, earrings, etc.) While you’re sorting the pieces out, you should go through what you want to keep and what you would like to donate or gift to a friend. After you have decided what pieces you want to keep and they’re sorted into sections, you will have a better idea of the type of storage you’re going to need.
Step 2. Tender Love & Care
Untangle all of your jewelry but use caution to make sure that you don’t damage any pieces. Safety pins are great for helping to un-knot chains! Plan repair any pieces that are broken and need some TLC before you put them back into your jewelry space. You should also consider taking your precious metal/ jewel pieces to your local jeweler to have them professionally cleaned and checked for loose stones/ or any routine maintenance that should be done.
Note: Most jewelers, like ourselves, offer complimentary and thorough cleaning and inspection for our customers. Take advantage of that service to keep your treasured pieces in tip-top shape! You can also check out our DIY blog on how to clean your jewelry at home.
Step 3. Storage That Feels Good
Once you have selected your jewelry and organized into categories, you’ll want to make sure you have the appropriate storage options. You can DIY jewelry stands or go out and purchase a container, box, or wall hanger that feels good to you.
Types of storage:
â— Jewelry box
â— Necklace holder
â— Drawer storage
â— Ring dish
â— Multiple drawer box
â— Wall storage
Key Tip: When shopping for storage options, you should have a count of how many necklaces, earrings, bracelets, etc., you have. This will make it SO much easier and will save you a trip back to the store when you need more/less storage than you thought you needed.
Step 4. Make it Make Sense
Now that your jewelry is clean and organized and you have your storage options, it’s finally time to store your beloved pieces! We recommend storing each piece of jewelry with a spacer or in a section where it has its own space. This will allow you to quickly see your options and choose which piece you’d like to put on. Leaving room between the pieces will prevent them from scratching each other or getting tangled!
Have some staple pieces that you wear more than others? We recommend keeping your go-to jewelry in an easily accessible so that you can quickly put it on or take it off. This also applies to pieces that you wear up until you crawl into bed. (i.e. placing a ring dish on your nightstand!)
Leave the jewelry dish or box in the same place so that you get in the habit! Most importantly you want your storage solution to make sense for your lifestyle.
Key Tip: If you’re limited on space then consider wrapping or placing a piece of suede between your pieces. Its soft texture will add a layer of protection and can be found in many colors at your local fabric store.
Key Tip: Avoid storing your jewelry in a dish that’s near a vent or drain. In the event of an accident or your dish being bumped, it will prevent your jewelry from being lost into the darkness.
*Bonus Step:
Organization on the road is as important (if not more) than when you’re at home. You typically travel with your most cherished accessories which are oftentimes heirloom, sentimental, or very valuable. This makes them hard to replace should anything happen. We’ve added some helpful tips below to help make sure that you don’t lose your favorite pieces while traveling!
• Designate a small jewelry box or purchase a travel case/pouch for your travel pieces. We recommend investing in a travel jewelry case or jewelry pouch that is sectioned off and will prevent tangling!
• Make sure your items are secure in the storage selected. You don’t want to let your necklaces tangle and your diamond earrings rub against one another. Choose a holder with snaps for your necklaces, openings for your earring posts, or slots for your rings.
• Organize your pieces by category so that you can quickly make sure each is accounted for.
• Add a small lock on the zipper so that it remains shut. ALWAYS keep your jewelry with you and in your carry-on, never in a checked bag.
Key Tip: We highly recommend covering your jewelry with an insurance policy, especially if it has value to you (sentiment and monetary). This will ensure a replacement for you in the worst-case scenario. Check out our blog on keeping your jewelry safe with insurance.
